A fun, if inessential, film for fans who want a bit more Star Wars to enjoy.

Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo and Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca - from Solo: A Star Wars Story

This is what I've been watching and playing over the last seven days...

Solo: A Star Wars Story

Movie summary: During an adventure in the criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his future co-pilot Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian years before joining the Rebel Alliance. (IMDb)

I have to admit that I'm not really sure why this movie exists, as it doesn't really add anything of note to the character of Han Solo or the wider Star Wars universe as a whole.

I liked it well enough, with Solo recovering from what felt like a very slow start and only really hitting its stride when Alden Ehrenreich's Han rescues Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo) and the pair team up with Woody Harrelson's Beckett.

Even then, it's not much more than a fairly well-made action-adventure that does have its moments that highlight how good the movie really could've been if the script hadn't been trying to shoe-horn in as many references to Han's later adventures as possible.

In fact, while some may find the double/triple/quadruple-crossing at the end to be a bit much, I really liked how everything unfolded and it was here that Ehrenreich felt most like Harrison Ford's take on the character and something I wish we could've seen more of in the rest of the story.

While it's nice to have a little more Star Wars and I certainly don't feel my time was wasted, I'm not sure I'd ever be bothered about watching Solo again, with the few high points not really being enough to justify sitting through a story that never proves why it deserved to be told. [6/10]

GAMES

Started a new game as a Sherlock-type (meaning great with information and noticing details, not so much when dealing with real human beings); two days down and loving it as usual.

I previously completed this on Game Pass, but am now playing it on Steam as I got it as part of a bundle a while ago and thought I might as well go through it again.

I haven't been playing long but have already seen multiple 'normal' scenes, and even a couple of hidden scenes that I hadn't seen before, which is pretty cool.

Jurassic World Evolution

Resumed a save game; incubated two eggs; both failed almost immediately, wasting (in-game) money and (real and in-game time); closed the game again.

Tried again a few days, later; 1 out of 2 eggs failed, resulting the same wastage.

I get that games generally do get more difficult as you progress through them, but artificially increasing the difficulty by making things just not work? Never good.

Honestly, it gets one more chance and that's it - I've played it for long enough already to justify rating it.

Yakuza 0

The linear 'opening' seems to be over, but the sudden switch to 'open-world' is a little jarring as a result, leaving me really struggling to see what makes this series so popular.

It's nothing special to look at or listen to, the controls are stiff and there are just far too many interruptions for my liking. It's not quite got to the point of annoying me yet, like Jurassic World Evolution above, but I'm just over 5.5 hours in and coming close to the feeling like I'm forcing myself to play it.

Once I really get that feeling, I'll be stopping with this too.

TV

No new shows started since finishing Fallout, although Dopesick on Disney+ is what I'll be watching next.
