Matrix Movie Rankings

Finally seen the fourth - time for The Matrix Rankings

Yes, this is going to be a short list considering there's only been four movies and no, The Animatrix does not count as it isn't a movie - although it would rank second if I did include it, purely for the two-parter story "The Second Renaissance", which you should be able to find on YouTube and you should definitely watch it. There's four films, so one will unfortunately miss out on a podium spot.

To be honest, there's also a clear winner here, so what's number one shouldn't be any surprise, although some might take exception to Resurrections finishing anywhere other than dead last. Then again, this a personal list and not a definitive ranking that I believe all others should agree with and accept as fact, so those taking exception can do so and I simply won't care - they're not me.

4. The Matrix Revolutions (2003)

I don't dislike this movie, but it feels the least 'Matrixy' of the bunch, with my overriding memory being of the real world stuff and the big sci-fi battle scenes, with the in-Matrix stuff barely mattering - not great for a movie with 'The Matrix' in the title.

3. The Matrix Resurrections (2021)

Recency bias? I don't think so. I liked the way Lana Wachowski revisited and refreshed things for this (currently) final visit to this fictional universe, playing on audience expectations and adding a ton of meta-commentary about making this movie in the first place.

2. The Matrix Reloaded (2003)

While definitely not the best of the bunch, I don't think it's as bad as some others claim either although elements of what would cripple Revolutions do first appear here. On the other hand, the sequence starting in the chateau and ending on the freeway is arguably the action high point of the series.

1. The Matrix (1999)

Is anyone surprised that this is top? Anyone at all? It's a brilliant, brilliant movie filled to the brim with amazing action, incredible effects work, astounding imagery and ideas, with an equally great score and soundtrack on top. It might be a little dated now, but it's still pretty bloody good.
