Hancock | Spinnortality
Superhero shenanigans and a cyberpunk spreadsheet simulator.
MOVIES
- Hancock hasn't got the greatest reputation, by which I mean it seems to be generally looked upon as a poor movie, which I think is harsh.
- I don't think it's a particularly good movie either, but there's enough good to enjoy it overall as a breather from the superhero movies being made today.
- Saying that, part of the dislike seems to be people not liking the tone shift of the movie after a certain reveal plays out.
- Audiences rejecting movies for strong shifts in tone will always be weird to me, as it's something Sunshine was also criticised for, and I think that movie is actually pretty damn good.
- I really like Will Smith as Hancock, who is an arsehole that Smith's charm keeps on just the right side of likeable before he actually starts trying to be better.
- I also enjoyed the 'origin' of his powers, and how what once might've been considered gods or angels now get labelled as superheroes (hello Thor!).
- Charlize Theron is great as Mary and Jason Bateman as Ray, with Eddie Marsan as an enjoyably shitty villain years before he would go on to play another in Deadpool 2.
- Hancock does have a short running time, which works both for and against it.
- I think much like The Marvels, it's easy enough for me to overlook a lot of minor problems because the movie doesn't take up much of your time.
- On the other hand, the movie is quite disjointed in telling its story, with each new wrinkle kind of just happening when a lot of moments could've benefitted from a little fleshing out.
- Hancock isn't the greatest movie ever, but it's enjoyable enough for the short time it takes to get through it and is a superhero movie a little different from what you see today. [6/10]
GAMES
- I'm not going to spend too long on Spinnortality as I bounced off it quite quickly and I think a score for shorthand as my opinion is even less valuable than usual.
- The game's biggest problem is that there's not enough meat on the bone, with the setting of the game needing a hell of a lot more fleshing out than what there is.
- I get that this isn't a big budget game or anything like that, but there really needs to be more reason given to do what you're doing beyond the game needing you to do it because that's what the game is.
- What I mean is that this is a game about making numbers on different screens go up and that's about it.
- You do get emails from various characters and meet the board of the company you're running occasionally, but there was little, if any, more story-telling beyond that.
- Maybe the story does become more involved later on and the world expands to draw you in and get you invested in why you're doing what you are, but nothing like that was even on the horizon by the time I stopped.
- As far as the game goes, everything makes a logical sense in what action causes a particular reaction, but I just didn't care as the game didn't give me any reason to.
- If you want a cyberpunk-themed game about mindlessly making business numbers go up, Spinnortality is the game for you, which is a demographic I can't see being that large. [4/10]
TV
- I'm a few episodes into season six of The West Wing and surprised at a couple of big changes I thought came much later, which certainly worked at getting me interested again.
- I've also binged the entirety of The Good Place again because that show is so much fun and so satisfying for something so easy to get through.
